Drug Name

Glucosamine Sulfate

Drug Uses

Glucosamine Sulfate provides significant benefits for both the structure and function of joints.

How Taken

As a dietary supplement, take one capsule three times daily.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Glucosamine Sulfate is a naturally occurring amino sugar. Amino sugars are key constituents of larger compounds called glycosaminoglycans and glycoproteins, which enable cells in tissues to hold together. They are necessary for the construction and maintenance of virtually all connective tissues and lubricating fluids in the body: tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bone matrix, skin, joint fluid, intestinal lining and mucous membranes.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Glucosamine Sulfate, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Storage

Store Glucosamine Sulfate at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Glucosamine Sulfate out of the reach of children and away from pets.

Warnings/Precautions

There are some side effects with Glucosamine. First of all, Glucosamine and diabetes may not do very well together. It has been shown that Glucosamine could actually contribute to diabetes.

Also, if you have an allergy to shell fish, you should stay away from Glucosamine. This is because Glucosamine is manufactured from naturally occurring shellfish and some of the allergens could be present in the supplement.

Possible Side Effects

Two possible Glucosamine side effects are softened stools and increased intestinal gas.

More Information

For some osteoarthritis patients, the Glucosamine Sulfate benefits have been potent enough to make them refrain from using any other medication. Others need to combine Glucosamine Sulfate with other forms of osteoarthritis treatment, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). There are also a substantial number of patients who do not experience any Glucosamine Sulfate benefits or experience only insignificant benefits when taking Glucosamine Sulfate supplements. Never change your current osteoarthritis treatment on your own; always discuss with your doctor first. It is also a good idea to confer with your doctor before you start taking any Glucosamine Sulfate supplements.
